Endocrine Disruptors in Wastewater

The endocrine system is a network of glands and organs that controls your body’s hormone levels, as well as coordinate metabolism, energy levels, reproduction, growth, and responses to injury stress and mood.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals are non-natural chemicals that interfere with the body’s natural systems. They can mimic, block, or interfere with natural hormones and have been associated with a variety of health issues. These issues include abnormalities in sex organs, nervous system function, breathing problems, metabolic issues, and neurological and learning disabilities, among others.

Exposure to these chemicals is bound to happen. They are present in the air, food, products, and water.

The main issue with these chemicals is not a one-time exposure, the issue arises with continued interactions and a buildup of these chemicals in the body.

Though it sounds rather overwhelming, there are ways to limit your exposure and to encourage legislature for curtailing large industries where endocrine disruptors are found.
